Speech read in Thor Anders naming ceremony celebrated last Saturday (31/03) at Hotel Nestors in Korpo. Love <3
Part one
Today we celebrate the arrival of a new member to the community, and even if this is a day specially dedicated to him, we cannot forget the other children that has been born lately, they are a blessing for a rural community that is seeing how the number of inhabitants decrease decade after decade.
Today is a day to celebrate life, life is full of presents for those who have the sensibility of seeing most of the things that life offer day after day as gifts: sunsets, the colors of the nature, the vision of a tree, the waves caressing the rocks, the vegetables in our fridge… but also all the people that life has cross in our way along the years. Many of them are here today, but a number at least as vast are not. Everywhere I have been I have found sisters and brothers that I have embraced with my soul when I have recognized them as one of us, one of those persons that wants to make this world a better place. I cannot start saying names because the list would be endless, but all of them are in my heart right now, and many of them are also in Ida´s heart and being in both hearts means that they are also in Thor´s, just like all of you.
It is also a day to celebrate community, the love, the closeness, the project in common that all the people that are here today are building step by step, a project filled with light, companionship, comprehension, joy, awareness, future… and what would it be of projects like this one without places where one can join and celebrate feeling home? That’s why we cannot forget the places and the people that makes them possible, because places are not mere objects but spaces with which we relate and in which we relate, and Nestor has become a central space for this beautiful community and I would like to show my gratitude to Frank, Pia, William and all the people that has made possible that this place become a space where to meet and celebrate.
Part two
It has been a bit more than one month (plus nine months) that Thor has been between us, and in all this time this being has been a constant and intense source of inspiration for me… is a simple being, and because of this simplicity I see this person as perfect, wise. But not only that, Thor has also brought even more love and gratitude to this family, and love and gratitude appear in front of me as two of the most fundamental pillars for a good living.
Thor belongs to the future, and I have a deep trust in the new generations. Maybe they are all day long attending to the phone without paying too much attention to what happens around them, but for this same reason they are permanently exposed to ideas and thoughts from all around the world, some fresh and new ideas but also traditional ideas from cultures that has found answers to issues in which our cultures are stuck. I have also the feeling that with that global contact they learn not to be afraid of what is different because they understand that humanity means mainly diversity, and they learn that people is similar around the globe, we suffer and wish similar things.
Pepe Mujica says that changes are generational, we have no other choice that playing the game with the cards we have in our hands, but new generations can find new rules for the game. The actual world is in such a moment that precise urgent but with calm deep and radical changes, and the next generations are not going to be able to do the necessary changes unless we trust them and educate them for it. We cannot educate them only in those things we know or we think we know, we must educate them in the freedom of being whatever they want to be because the future belong to them, not to us. I trust that the next generations will stop making use of obsolete formulas and will find creative solutions for the world we have leave them, as I was saying, a world that we have complicated to the extreme and that I hope they will find the wat to simplify.
Like an example in which I base my faith in the next generations is Stefano, that it is today with us. One day we were walking in the forest, chatting, taking pictures if I remember correctly, when he told me «you know? I feel that if god is somewhere it is in the Nature, in the forest». He was thirteen years old back then, I was really surprise that he came that early to an understanding that I came much, much later in my life. I have friends in every age range, and age is not important for me, most of the time I don´t remember how old a person is, I just flow in the relationship with that person without prejudices.
Part three
Both me and Ida love tradition, but that something has become a tradition does not means that it is good or bad per se, because of that, we would like to review every tradition and transmit to our child those that we consider that offer something positive both for Thor and the society, rejecting those that doesn’t, having in mind that, as Gibran Kahlil wrote in the work The Prophet, «to the child you can give love, but not your thoughts, because they have their own thoughts». It is important for me to respect Thor thoughts as they arise in her interior, encouraging him to pass them through the filter of doubt, because doubt it is like clean water, purifying the mind, encouraging them to have a powerfully critical spirit and free of believes.
That me and Ida love tradition is reflected in the names Thor receives from us today. Anders from Ida’s grandfather who died recently, and Thor that is said to be a Nordic god, but as I have been investigating it can be much older than that. As more I study religion history as more I realize how everything is a merging of something older and simpler, and that spiritual simplicity become loaded with a bunch of rituals, interpretations, meanings and orthodoxy that with the passage of time ends up spoiling the deep meaning of things. It´s is important to be radical, that in an etymological meaning ´come back to the roots´, simplifying and digging deeply in the flexibility necessary for the trees to stay standing with the wind hitting them constantly.
That Ida and I loves tradition is reflected in the invitation that we made to Maria to narrate a story in public today, the transmission of stories and legends that give a meaning to the world and the universe and connect them with our emotions and our memories is getting lost, but luckily some people like Maria are dedicating their vital energy to obtain legends, stories, proverbs, wisdom that they share with us to illuminate our time. We humans are missing the tradition of sitting down by the fire in a starry night to listen what the old people has to transmit to the community.
That Ida and I love tradition is reflected in a practice that we have embraced for some time now and that for millennia has been a practice to exercise the body and the spirit bringing awareness about oneself and its environment. To this very old tradition some has given the name of yoga.
An I would like to end my speech here, I hope you enjoy the celebration and that together we can create a more respectful and interconnected humanity. Thank all your for coming. I love you.
